The plugin IIRC does use some various metadata as suggested above to find potential duplicates, but what is a duplicate, vs an export or something you wanna keep, is kind of a tough question.

Just a bunch of folders with dupes and garbage images mixed in. I got excellent results with PhotoSweeper. Duplicates of all of those in deeper backup folders Mixed in there are photos that should never see the light of day. I used this plugin and I think it's good but at the end, it didn't fit my needs. That means it won't find two identical photos if one of them has all the metadata removed for any reason.
